JANAKALYAN SEVASHRAM was promoted as a company form of organization on  18 -11-1997 by a very few like minded senior citizens with a view to apply it’s income only for the construction and maintenance of homes for the aged men and women and also  orphaned children. This was done at the behest and blessings of HIS  HOLINESS  The Shankarcharya, with the avowed object of running homes for the down-trodden, neglected aged parents and destitute children.

The Beginning:-

The Chairman of the Janakalyan Sevashram Shri K.R.Raman's ardent desire to help the senior citizens and destitute children was given a concrete shape by starting an Ashram on a rented premises at Koparkhairne in 1997 with a lone lady senior citizen. All her needs were looked after as a member of the family.

Within 6 months, by oral publicity, about 6 to 7 members approached Mr. Raman, to accommodate them in the Ashram. With the help of Shri Hariharan of Indian express, all formalities to promote a company under section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956, were fulfilled and Jankalyan Sevashram was born on 18th Nov 1997.

The ashram shortly after this event in Nov1997 had to be moved to New Panvel, where 5 flats were taken on rent to accommodate 20 senior citizens and 12 children. With the continuous growth and number of admissions, the ashram was shifted to 10 rented flats at Kolkhe Village, Panvel, in the year 2000.

THE PROGRESS:-

With the donations received from philanthropic minded people and with the blessings of His Holiness, the Sevashram acquired a piece of land admeasuring 10,000 sq. ft. at the Village Parbund, about 2.5 Kms away from Panvel Bus Stand on the old Mumbai-Pune Road. The foundation stone was laid by His Holiness The Shankaracharya on 20th June 2001.

It’s only with His Grace and the blessings of His Holiness and the munificent donations by the kind, liberal minded people and self less dedicated service put in by voluntary sevaks led by Shri. K. R. Raman, this project's total cost of over Rs. 1 Crore could be completed within a period of 14 months. The new building at Parpund in Panvel was inaugurated by His Holiness on 23-1-2003.

This building has 3 floors with 30 rooms in all, 10 rooms on each floor. Each room has an area of 18’x 14’ with cross ventilation with attached bathroom, toilet, washbasin, hot water facility and two fans. The building can accommodate more than 100 persons.

There are presently 80 senior members of whom 45 are women and 35 are gents as also about 90 school going children. All the need of the ashramites are met, including medicines and hospitalization. Apart from accommodation, we give sumptuous, food and also new clothes 4 times a year. The children are well taken care of and enrolled in the Schools in the locality. Their school fees, uniforms, shoes and the transport charges are borne by the Ashram. Apart from accepting the voluntary donations offered by the ashramites, no fees as such are charged on the children for their living and education at any point of time. Within the same building there are rooms specially planned for children with 2 attached bathrooms. The ground floor of the building has a provision for a large kitchen and dining hall. At the center of the hall on the ground floor a beautiful temple dedicated to Maha Ganapathy has been built where all the occupants assemble for prayers and daily Puja. To boost the morale of the Ashramites -  satsangs, counselling sessions, religious functions and cultural programmes are held from time to time. This also helps in diverting their minds away from their unkind  past and live with courage and  honour in the present. All able bodied members of the ashram assemble in the dining hall for meals. Those who cannot come to the dining hall are provided meals in their rooms. All medical needs are provided to the Ashramites  by 1st of every month (for next 30 days).

It is our earnest desire to have another building for 100 children. We need donors and patrons for this building. Donations in cash of one Lac and above will have the donors name engraved in a marble plaque at the entrance of this building.

On the occasion of Mahakumbha-Abhishekam of Sri Mahaganapathy Temple by His Holiness The Shankaracharya, a proposal to start a Veda Patashala from 14-4-2004 at our New Premises at row house no. 03 and 103, Bldg no. 9, Sankalp Ashirwad Complex, Usroli village, Panvel, only one km away from our Panvel Ashram, took shape.

Apart from the Panvel complex for senior citizens and destitute children, the ashram is running 12 senior citizen homes  at:  Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi,  Kashi, Kolkatta, Madurai,  Mysore,   Palakkad,  Secunderabad, Tirunelveli,   Vadodara & recently Tsunami Relief branch at Nagapattinam. Click here to know more about the statistics of these ashram branches. It is the ardent desire of the management of sevashram to run the home for the aged in as many towns as possible.
